How to get there?
For those planning on flying, Kochi is the nearest airport to Alleppey. From there on one can hire a cab and reach this beautiful city of backwaters. Alleppey though has a railway station within city limits as well.

The backwaters of Kerala stretch over 1500 km, with a network of 44 rivers, lagoons, and lakes. Alleppey forms the majority of this network and is unique because the water is level with the land here.
Alleppey being the hub of backwater tourism in Kerala, a trip here is unimaginable without a ride on the houseboats.
Add to that the charm of the lovely church filled town of Kottayam, and the extremely famous and historic Aranmula Snake Boat Race.
The spectacular snake boat race is held every year on the second Saturday of August and is a huge crowd puller. This competition was christened after India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and was inaugurated in 1952. These boats are manned by hundreds of oarsmen, and they cut through the water like the wind.
And, how can one visit Kerala, without indulging in the intoxicating ayurvedic massage sessions? Kerala and Alleppey are famous for its ayurvedic treatments, which are nothing less than a trip down heaven.

Houseboats are the most popular accommodation option in Alleppey. They float during the day and dock at night. But, if you are not keen on spending the night on the water, then Alleppey is home to numerous resorts and guest houses, available in every budget.
When to visit?
Alleppey is an all-weather destination, depends on what exactly you are looking for. Ideally, winters are the best time to visit, since the temperatures are relatively low. But, if you are looking to avoid the crowds, then plan a summer trip. Though, be prepared and go laden with light cotton clothes and sunscreen. As far as the monsoons go, it is best to avoid them, unless you love rains and want to experience it. Houseboats though do not ply during the monsoon season.
